Running a Remote Trivia Quiz Via ZOOM

With the social distancing standards caused by the Coronavirus outbreak, many people and venues are looking at ways to stay connected with each other and their customer base. A remote trivia quiz is an innovative way to stay entertained, informed and connected in these trying times.

A Trivia Quiz is a fun and entertaining way to keep people engaged. It is being used by family and friends who want to stay connected and spend some time together remotely. By businesses for motivation and team-building. And Quizmasters and venues who want to keep their patrons engaged.

People are coming up with clever ways to stay connected. There are various ways of running such a quiz but two successful platforms are Zoom and Facebook.

With Facebook, you can use Facebook Live or a Facebook Group.

My preference is Zoom and below are instructions on how you can setup a Trivia Quiz remotely on the platform.

What is ZOOM?

Zoom provides a remote conferencing service that combines video conferencing, online meetings, chat, and mobile collaboration.

Easy to setup, It is a reliable platform where people can invite others to participate in audio and video conferencing to collaborate, chat and host webinars from anywhere that has an internet connection.

Cost of Zoom

There are various subscriptions. The Free subscription is fully featured and includes screen share, private and group chat, and hosting up to 100 people. Its limitation is if there are more than two people you are limited to a 40min meeting. If you are doing a quick quiz this they may well fill all your needs.

The Pro version allows meetings upto 24hrs as well as other advanced features and is priced at $14/month.

Choose the subscription that suits your needs. I suggest you try the Free version before upgrading.

Starting A Zoom Meeting

Once you are ready to start your event, Login to your zoom account, and click on the "Host a Meeting" option, then "With Video On" located at the top right of your zoom account.

If this is the first time hosting a Zoom meeting, you may get prompted to install some software.

The first time using any new Software can be a little confusing. But once you have run one quiz on Zoom it becomes very easy and natural.

Sending Out ZOOM Invites

Once you are ready to invite your participants, you can click on the "Invite" option at the bottom of the screen. You will then be prompted to choose your email system then it will open up a new message window:

From this screen, you can either choose the participants from your email, or copy the link provided and send it to your players through another format like facebook, messenger, or text etc. If you use the link, there is no need to put in a password or Meeting ID.

Running The Quiz

Although there are many different ways you can run the quiz, this is a suggested way, which can easily be adapted to suit your own needs and situation.

Before starting the quiz, you might want to make sure everyone is familiar with the chat feature, and the zoom interface.

Our quiz packs come with a Powerpoint and this can be easily set up so teams can see the question and the picture Rounds.

How to run a Powerpoint Presentation on Zoom

When everyone is ready to begin, start the quiz with category one question one.

Read the question aloud twice, and then give the teams some time to figure out the answer. 30 seconds per question should be a sufficient amount of time.

How the Teams Answer in Zoom

The teams can answer the question by typing the answer to you, the quizmaster, in a chat box. The text should be sent to the Quizmaster, and no one else will be able to see the answer. Each team/player types the answer in the chat box and to encourage teams not to use the internet, you can reward teams who reply quickly.

Scoring:

Picture Rounds

Pubquizpro quiz packs come equipped with hand out rounds. The simple way is to just display the picture round on the screen for the teams to see. Using the Powerpoint presentation makes this easy. Alternatively you can send the teams the file and they can look at it on their computer. Give the players enough time to answer the ten questions. You can then display, or tell the participants, the answers and have the players tell you how many correct answers they had, and update the scoring system accordingly.

If you are using an audio round, there is something that you will need to do in Zoom. From the share window, click on the "Advanced" tab at the top, then click on "Music or Computer Sound Only" - If you play any music (Audio Round) on your computer, it will now play through the speakers of the players computers.

The BAFFLER

At the end of each round read out the Baffler clue. If you eliminate a round, just incorporate two clues into one round. Award points for depending on what round the team solves the Baffler.

There is no one best way of running a remote trivia quiz night. My best advice is as much as possible Keep it Simple-.
